September 9 @ 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Crooked Knife Making: Tool Workshop

Students will be guided through the process of making their own crooked (or hook) carving knife. You will be provided with a flat ground 01 tool steel blank and a new file for shaping the blank. A gas torch is used to heat the steel to bend into a crook and to harden the blade. Your finished knife will be fastened to a handle with rivets.

This is an all day workshop, you will need to pack a bag lunch and snacks as there are no food vendors nearby.

INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHIES

Rick Wolcott: I identify as 3/4 white and 1/4 Tillamook from the Southern end of Coast Salishian Speakers, although nobody speaks our language anymore. My family came to Canada in 1953 after living in all the western and mid-western States and Mexico. My father was in Seismic work. We had a Pawnee crew and my God father was Owen Echo Hawk. I have been carving since I was 5 according to my mom. We visited my mom’s parents every summer and I spent summers and weekends with him while going to school in Portland. My Grandfather was James Forest, a Nehalem Tillamook on the Oregon coast. He taught me tool making and told me many stories from the coast and how to represent them in woods. I began teaching with the Calgary Board of Education in 1980 and have taught ever since. I’ve taught across Canada and the United States and am currently teaching 8 two-day classes through Lee Valley Tools. We are doing Westcoast Paddles. For the last 10 years, I run weekly classes out of my shop. I have also taught week long classes at Kin Beach PP near Comox for 15 years. My commissioned pieces are in France, Germany, United States and Canada although I do not work through any galleries and don’t have a website – just word of mouth.
