Gisele Maria Martin, Tla-o-qui-aht Language Apprentice with Special Guests
Tla-o-qui-aht people and the life force of this land are one. Our Nuu-chah-nulth language reflects our identity and place. The words we speak carve a life of connection, or cut us into colonial wilderness. Explore the carving of this home with us.
Introduction by Tla-o-qui-aht Elder, Levi Martin. Levi will be sharing the spiritual teachings of the Tla-o-qui-aht carver’s relationship to the trees in the ancient forest.
Gisele is a member of the Tla-o-qui-aht Nation on the west coast of Vancouver Island. She is a Nuu-chah-nulth language activist, storyteller, singer and composer. She has worked as a First Nations cultural educator and interpretive guide since 1993. Her father, Joe Martin is a renowned traditional dug-out canoe carver and for many years she ran a culture canoe tour business out of Tofino. Gisele shares her love of these places and their life forms to uphold ancient cultural teachings and encourage continued responsibility interacting with and caring for the natural world. Gisele is involved in the movement to preserve and pass on traditional knowledge in her community, as well as various language revitalization efforts through local radio, immersion camps, field trips, and working with local schools. Gisele is apprenticing with Levi Martin to become fluent in her language.
Gisele is sought after to present at conferences and international gatherings. Her reputation as an incredible, engaging orator for children, youth and adult audiences is known far and wide.
