Learn to carve in the Viking style with local carver Christen Dokk Smith. We will be working with low relief viking design in hardwood based on carvings from the Viking era (approximately 850 CE).
There will be a strong teaching focus on repetitive details and accurate knife/tool handling. This workshop is a great opportunity for west coast carvers to explore cultural carving from another region. Suitable for carvers with some low relief carving experience. This is a 7 hour workshop with a lunch break please bring a bag lunch. Space for 8 participants.
Born and raised in Norway, Christen Dokk Smith did a 4 year apprenticeship in woodcarving at the Viking ship museum in Oslo. During his apprenticeship Christen was trained in the classical European way of carving, focusing on Viking, Medieval, Baroque and Rococo. He was also taught the art of making high precision replicas for the museum. Christen received in the autumn of 2011 a scholarship to go to the City and Guild of London Art school, where he could focus on his passion – sculptures. After graduating, Christen moved to Tofino to learn from the First Nation carvers and pursue an artistic career. Christen has done several commissions for the Viking ship museum, University in Oslo, churches and for individuals.
