Weeping Cedar Woman Dedication – Tofino Public Art
September 11, 2016 @ 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM
The Weeping Cedar Woman, carved in 1984 by artist Godfrey Stephens, has returned to Tofino as a public art acquisition by the District of Tofino. Join us for its dedication on Sunday, September 11 at 3pm. The celebration will include a traditional Tla-o-qui-aht blessing by Levi Martin, a welcome by Mayor Josie Osborne, and stories by the artist and friends.
Weeping Cedar Woman was carved to aid the protest of logging the ancient rainforests of Clayoquot Sound with a message ‘to stop and consider nature.’ It was an icon of BC’s first logging blockades.
Fundraising for the refurbishment and purchase of the statue took place in 2014 with many businesses, individuals and organizations supporting its return to Tofino from the artist’s studio on Salt Spring Island. The municipality recently set the statue in the Village Green.
Join us for a celebration of Tofino history and storytelling.
