2021 Festival

a Celebration of the Coastal Carver

2021 Carving on the Edge Festival

About this year's festival

Thank you for joining us for the Carving on the Edge 2021 Virtual Festival! We are so grateful for all of the generosity and enthusiasm from our presenters and festival participants. It is the community that makes this festival special. It is our commitment to cultural bridge building, supporting growth in the carving community and understanding the coastal traditions of carving that keep us focussed and inspired.

Our live sessions, such as the Hesquiaht Language Action Stories & Language Session, Experiential Panel Discussion on Cultural Appropriation, Joe Martin’s Čapaciił presentation, In the Making: Artist Show & Tell, and the Artist Talk with Hjalmer Wenstob, have all been recorded and uploaded to our YouTube channel. Head over there and subscribe to be notified when new videos are available. The film series, “Carver to Carver, hosted by Gordon Dick,” is also available there. Robinson Cook’s five-part workshop, Introduction to Wood Carving with Hand Tools as well as Gisele Martin’s film on the Čapac process, Čapaciił~Traditional Canoe Carving in ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ Tribal Parks with Joe Martin, are also available.

Head over to the “Explore” tab of the website to discover other festival resources. We have a post on the Self-Guided Walking Tour Map. As the weather gets warmer, it’s a perfect time to head outside and discover the amazing carver to view on the peninsula.

As always, head to the ‘Support Us’ tab and subscribe to our newsletter for updates on upcoming projects, post-festival resources—like Hjalmer Wenstob’s self-location exercise from the Cultural Appropriation panel discussion and printouts from the Hesquiaht Language Program—and more!

Thank you for joining us at the 2021 virtual festival and for supporting the carving community.
