This year’s festival focused on workshops and art shows in two communities, Ucluelet and Tofino. The First Nations Art Show, “Cedar: Tree of Life,” was hosted at Ucluelet’s Wya Welcome Centre where workshops and storytelling took place with master carvers including totem building with Calvin Hunt and George Hunt Jr. On location in Tofino, Joe Martin and Carl Martin hosted a 10-day workshop, “Passing on Traditional Knowledge,” to teach canoe building.
The Wya Welcome Centre also hosted the Carving Workshops: Design, Tools, Storytelling. This year’s festival introduced the Carving Map, a feature guide of all carvings throughout the Esowista peninsula, from the tip of Tofino to the lighthouse in Ucluelet.
