We are hosting a two-day Artist Forum that will stimulate discourse on transmission of knowledge as it relates to artistic practice. Through centring the discussion on Indigenous principles of learning, carvers and weavers will reflect on their personal artistic journey and role in furthering the development of the coastal carving arts

Guest Artist Speakers will include Robin Rorick & Isabel Rorick, Phil Gray & Ernest Swanson, Rick Harry & James Harry, and Joe Martin & Gordon Dick.

Robin introduces the theme of the festival, Taking Care of Our Roots –  mułmunčʔałuk and what the title means to him. Robin and Isabel, speak about the connection between carving and weaving. And working together as mother and son to create artworks.

Featured Artist Introductions (Part 1) Phil Gray + Ernest Swanson

11:30-12:30pm

Artists introduce themselves, their carving style and touch base on professional or personal relationships that have had a significant impact on their artistic practice. 

Phil Gray (TshiCree, and Ernest Swanson (Haida) speak about their partnerships, mentee and mentor opportunities.

Shared Lunch + Festival Overview

12:30pm-2pm

1) Staff (Christine & Ivy) provide detailed information for participating artists.

2) Eli Enns gives a talk about the history and future of the Naa'Waya’Sum Coastal Indigenous Gardens.

2pm-3pm

Conversation of passing on knowledge from father to son.

Rick Harry to speak about the mentorship House Post project at Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
