About this event

This 2-day workshop (Oct 5th & 6th) will introduce participants to understanding wood grain and alignment, identifying west coast wood species. Students will learn about the different types of tools, their safe use, care and sharpening. We will also cover elements of design for carving and transferring designs from paper to wood. The main project will be to carve a shallow bowl from a prepared blank of wood. The bowl will have a large rim and may provide an opportunity for some shallow relief carving if time permits.

All materials, tools and wood will be provided. Please bring your own tools if you have them. The workshop consists of 12 hours of instruction; 9am-12pm & 1pm-4pm Sat Oct 5th & Sun Oct 6th. Please provide your own water and food for lunch. Bursaries available, please contact workshops@carvingedgefestival.com

Thank you to the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District and the British Columbia Arts Council for supporting this workshop.

Speaker

Robinson Cook

Since 2014, Robinson has been a key contributor to the success of the workshops programming component of the Carving on the Edge Festival. He has instructed several workshops himself, taken a leadership role in coordinating artist instructors and overseen production. Robinson’s community mindedness and long-standing relationships with artists in the carving community have contributed to his success in facilitating and growing the Open Carving Area. Following the 2018 festival, Robinson formed the Carving on the Edge Carving Club, an informal bimonthly gathering of carvers that was inspired by the desire to keep the momentum going from the festival and to support people who are not carving every day.
